“Do
You Really Want It? “
There is a story of a young man telling an
accomplished pianist, “I want to be a famous pianist like you and perform at Carnegie Hall.” The pianist replied, “No you don’t.” The young man persists,“Of course I do. Why would you say that?”
The pianist calmly replies: “Are you willing to practice 7-8 hours a day, 7 days a week, healthy or sick?
Are you willing to forego vacations, holidays, relationships, and family? Are you willing to
sacrifice EVERYTHING you know & love?”
The young man shook his head in regret, and walked
away.
The pianist looked at him and sadly replied, “I didn’t think so…”
We are all, at some point in our lives, guilty of
this notion.
We SAY…we
want to lose weight. Yet, our eating habits do not reflect a healthy diet.
We SAY…we
want to be debt-free. Yet, our spending habits and lack of fiscal discipline
are not reflective of this.
We SAY…we
want to get in shape. Yet, our refusal to exercise and avoidance of the gym
paint a different picture.
We SAY…we
want to be married. Yet, our disdain for men, lack of communication
skills, and unwillingness to compromise do not equate to this outcome.
We SAY…we
want to be more knowledgeable & well-read. Yet, our lack of study or
reading will not result in this.
Our lives are often lived in conflict &
contradiction. We DO what we say we don’t want; and DON’T DO what we say we
want. Example: We eat pizza when we say we want to be healthier. We
don’t do what the doctor recommends when it comes to feeling well.
We are often faced with this conflict spiritually.
We SAY we want to go to Heaven, yet we struggle with our obedience to God and releasing the ways of the
world.
The Bible mentions this:
Matthew
6:24(NKJV): “No one can serve two masters; for
either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the
one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (riches).”
Romans
12:2 (NKJV): “And do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is
that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Revelation
3:15-17 (NKJV): “I know your works, that you are
neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because
you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.
17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of
nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and
naked—“
